5 surprising benefits of calligraphy

Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes

Having practised calligraphy since 2017, I can testify to the many benefits that it has to offer. Some were really quite unexpected.

Patience

Did you know that learning and practicing calligraphy can improve your patience? When I first started learning calligraphy, my life was 100 miles an hour. Modern life and its 'instant results', 'likes', same day delivery, facebook feed and google maps traffic updates had led me to expect immediacy. Safe to say I was not a patient person.

However Calligraphy requires patience! You have to letter slowly, it takes time and consideration. When I first started learning calligraphy THIS WAS A MASSIVE learning curve. But it turned out to be the best decision I ever made! I quickly realised the the more patient I was, the better my calligraphy became. Practicing calligraphy cultivated patience in me and has definitely been the most surprising benefit !

Inspiring Creativity

So many of us have long neglected our creativity. We can't remember the last time we sat down to do something 'arty'. Do you know that our brains love being creative. Yet so many of us don't prioritise or put time aside to get a bit messy and outside our comfort zone. It helps switch off our brains and focus on one thing at a time - something that modern life does not allow much time for!

According to a recent study, being creative for an hour a week can improve our well being and mental health. The great thing about calligraphy it's very simple to get started, has minimal mess, requires a small amount of space and storage. With a small amount of equipment you can start practising straight away making it easier than ever to make time to be creative. My beginner kit and course is a great place to start which you can find more details about here

Time away from screens

Practising calligraphy is really good to help take you off screens and back to good old pen and paper. Analogue activities are proven to reverse the affects of screen time and provide a relaxing leisure activity. i'm currently writing post about why I left social media for 4 months and how it massively impacted my creativity. I share my story about less socials and more creativeness.

Personalised gifts

Many of us love sending personal gifts. Learning calligraphy opens up lots of opportunities to make personalised and special presents. This not only saves you money but also enables you to create beautiful handmade gifts that your friends will love and cherish.

Connecting with others

Through practising calligraphy I have met so many amazing fellow calligraphers. None of whom I would have met if I hadn't of started calligraphy. These have become loyal clients and friends from across the country and the world. It's been the most wonderful and surprising benefit of calligraphy.
